▶️ IUDs, MENSTRUATION, BEDWETTING, & THE SITZ BATH
▶️ Can you take a sitz bath during your period?
It's a YES!
– A sitz bath is a type of bath therapy that involves sitting in warm, shallow water that covers the perineal area, which is the space between the rectum and the vulva or scrotum. A sitz bath can help cleanse, soothe, and heal the perineal area, especially if it is affected by conditions such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, postpartum recovery, Bartholin cysts, or genital herpes.
– You can take a sitz bath during your period, as long as you follow some precautions and hygiene measures. A sitz bath during your period can help relieve menstrual cramps, reduce inflammation, and prevent infection in the perineal area. However, you may also run a higher chance of developing an infection if you take a sitz bath on your period, as the cervix is more relaxed and dilated during your period, which can increase the likelihood of an infection entering your uterus. The bathwater may not be the most hygienic place to relax.
– To take a sitz bath during your period, you should:
• Clean the bathtub or the sitz bath kit before and after each use, with bleach or other disinfectants.
• Use clean and fresh water, and avoid adding any substances that may irritate your skin or vagina, such as soap, alcohol, or perfumed products. You can add Epsom salt, vinegar, baking soda, or povidone-iodine, if recommended by your doctor, to enhance the effects of the bath.
• Test the temperature of the water, and make sure it is warm but not hot enough to cause burns or discomfort. You can test the temperature of the water by placing a drop or two on your wrist.
• Soak your perineal area for 10 to 20 minutes, and avoid submerging your entire body or your abdomen in the water, as this may increase the risk of infection or bleeding.
• Gently pat yourself dry with a clean cotton towel, and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the perineal area, as this may cause pain and irritation.
• Change your sanitary pad or tampon after the bath, and wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to allow air circulation and reduce sweating and friction.
• Monitor your vaginal discharge and bleeding, and report any signs of infection, such as foul-smelling odor, yellow or green color, increased amount, or fever, to your doctor.
– A sitz bath during your period can be a safe and effective way to treat and prevent perineal conditions that cause pain, inflammation, itching, or infection. However, a sitz bath is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment, and it may not work for everyone or for every condition. If the symptoms are severe, persistent, or recurrent, or if there are any complications, such as bleeding, infection, or tissue damage, it is advisable to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
▶️ Can you take a sitz bath if you have an intrauterine device (IUD)?
It's a YES!
– An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two types of IUDs: hormonal and copper. Hormonal IUDs release a progestin hormone that thickens the cervical mucus and thins the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg and for the egg to implant. Copper IUDs release copper ions that create an inflammatory reaction in the uterus, which is toxic to sperm and prevents fertilization.
– You can take a sitz bath if you have an IUD, as long as you follow some precautions and hygiene measures. A sitz bath can help relieve menstrual cramps, reduce inflammation, and prevent infection in the perineal area. However, you may also run a higher chance of developing an infection if you take a sitz bath with an IUD, as the cervix is more relaxed and dilated during your period, which can increase the likelihood of an infection entering your uterus. Again, the bathwater may not be the most hygienic place to relax.
– To take a sitz bath with an IUD, you should:
• Clean the bathtub or the sitz bath kit before and after each use, with bleach or other disinfectants.
• Use clean and fresh water, and avoid adding any substances that may irritate your skin or vagina, such as soap, alcohol, or perfumed products. You can add Epsom salt, vinegar, baking soda, or povidone-iodine, if recommended by your doctor, to enhance the effects of the bath.
• Test the temperature of the water, and make sure it is warm but not hot enough to cause burns or discomfort. You can test the temperature of the water by placing a drop or two on your wrist.

• Gently pat yourself dry with a clean cotton towel, and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the perineal area, as this may cause pain and irritation.
– A sitz bath with an IUD can be a safe and effective way to treat and prevent perineal conditions that cause pain, inflammation, itching, or infection. However, a sitz bath is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment, and it may not work for everyone or for every condition.
▶️ Can children take a sitz bath?
It's a YES!
– Children can take a sitz bath, as long as they are supervised by their parents or guardians to help alleviate any pain in their perineal conditions that cause pain, inflammation, itching, or infection.
▶️ Can a sitz bath help with bedwetting?
– In as much as a sitz bath can help with healing after certain medical procedures or conditions, such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or childbirth, a sitz bath is not a proven treatment for bedwetting, which is also known as nocturnal enuresis. Bedwetting is a common condition that affects many children and some adults. It can have various causes, such as genetics, bladder problems, hormonal imbalances, stress, or sleep disorders.
– If you or someone you know is struggling with bedwetting, it is best to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Some possible treatments include medication, behavioral therapy, alarms, or bladder training. A sitz bath may provide some comfort, but it is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.
